KULAMBA TRADITIONAL CEREMONY

28th August 2010

Kulamba Traiditional Ceremony is an annual homage paying ceremony of the Chewa Chiefs from Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia to the King (or Kalonga) of the Chewa People. The Chewa are a Bantu speaking people predominantly found in the 3 countries. It is the oldest modern tribe found in these three countries after the Akafula(dwarfs)who were the ancient inhabitants.

This ceremony is performed on the last Saturday of August every year. Kulamba means paying homage to the King(now Kalonga Gawa Undi Mkhomo the XI). August is symbolic to this tribe because it is considered a stock taking month for the harvests since this tribe has always relied on agriculture for their livelihood since time immemorial. This homage is done through ‘public reports’ made by delegations of chiefs from the 3 countries with gifts in traditional bags made of tree bulks.

Banned for 50 years by the Portuguese and British, the event came back in the public domain in 1984. The event starts a week before when the King goes into seclusion in the “bush” consulting with the “spirits” and only emerges from there at the culmination of the event on the last Saturday of August. It is a high profile event that draws many brotherly kings and chiefs from other tribes in the countries of the SADC region as well as heads of states from neighboring countries as guests but the ceremony remains purely traditional with chiefs and elders of the tribe in control.

TOUR GUIDE
Tour guides are the principal interface between tourists, the attractions and the local community and the environment. They are the first to give the general impression and satisfaction of customers towards the destinations. In order to guide tourists through a destination, tour guides need to have the necessary knowledge and skills, pay attention to group communication and interpersonal skills and responsibly mediate the socio-cultural, ecological and economic sustainability of touristic encounters with the local community and the natural environment. In short, tour guides make or break a tour and are the ultimate in promoting tourism and your business in Malawi and beyond. They need proper training.

Small Steps has qualified tour guides trainers, trained by Livingstone Dialoog(of Belgium); Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture and the Malawi Institute of Tourism. Certified by Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture, these trainers provide training to companies, associations and other stakeholders who provide touristic products in the tourism industry. These include tour guides not yet trained, tour operators, taxi operators, car hire companies, companies and organizations dealing with visitors and others requiring skills and knowledge in professional tour guiding.Trainers will undergo Interactive and practice oriented training in which participants will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to become guides. The training covers but not limited to the following areas:

- Tour Guide roles and competences.
- Current trends in tour guiding
- The tourist (Who is he? What does he want? Where does he come from?),
- Group communication and Dynamics, Conflict Management and Intercultural   Communication
- Sustainable Tourism and its trends
- Making the tour: preparation, tour (accommodation, transport, visiting, first aid)   .........and many more!
